Assessing the influence of job demands and job control on work-life balance among nurses at Mbingo Baptist Hospital
    (2026)
    Ceraphine Mbomngho
Background:Work-life imbalance is a growing concern among nurses, yet the way job demands and job control jointly shape it has been little studied in low- and middle-income settings such as Cameroon. Purpose:This study assessed the influence of job demands and job control on the work-life balance of nurses at Mbingo Baptist Hospital, Cameroon. Method: A cross-sectional quantitative design was used. A structured questionnaire adapting the Copenhagen Psychosocial Questionnaire III (Burr et al., 2019) was completed by 186 nurses selected through census sampling. Constructs were summarized as composite mean scores, internal consistency was assessed with Cronbach's alpha, and the data were analyzed in Stata 18 using descriptive statistics, Pearson correlation, and multiple linear regression, with a moderation test and a bootstrap robustness check. Results: Job demands were moderate to high (M = 3.39) and job control wasmodest (M = 2.66), while most nurses reported a poor work-life balance (M = 2.40; 57.5% in the low band). Job demands significantly reduced work-life balance (B = -0.60, p < .001) and job control significantly improved it (B = 0.29, p < .001); the model explained 30% of the variance. Job control did not moderate the effect of job demands. Conclusion: Job demands and job control independently shaped nurses' work-life balance, indicating that both reducing demands and strengthening control, particularly control over working time, are needed to improve it.
